Watching the Wheels
27 October 2010
This is the fifth article in my series about my (un)employment situation and my continuing journey following Yeshua (Jesus). If you have missed any of the four previous articles, you might want to read them first so that you can put today's article into context.
A couple of weeks ago I ran across a song by John Lennon available on his album Power To The People. I was listening to samples of each song when the words to Watching The Wheels caught my attention. Seeing that I don't particularly care for John Lennon's music, this kind of surprised me.

So I looked up the lyrics, and found that, while they don't apply to my situation exactly, there were quite a few similarities, and the words really resounded in my heart. This song was written during a five-year sabbatical that John took from the music business. Here are some more details from the Wikipedia article on John Lennon:

Having previously suffered three miscarriages in her attempt to have a child with Lennon, Ono said she wanted an abortion. She agreed to allow the pregnancy to continue on condition that Lennon adopt the role of househusband; this he agreed to do. Lennon's second son, Sean, was born in October 1975. Lennon now took on the role of househusband, beginning what would be a five-year break from the music industry during which he gave all his attention to his family. He devoted himself to Sean, rising at 6 am daily to plan and prepare his meals and to spend time with him. He formally announced his break from music in Tokyo in 1977, saying, "we have basically decided, without any great decision, to be with our baby as much as we can until we feel we can take time off to indulge ourselves in creating things outside of the family." He emerged from retirement in October 1980 "passionate and reenergized, having found fulfillment in the stable family life that he'd been deprived of in his own youth."
So with that context, let's take a look at the lyrics to Watching the Wheels:
People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I'm o.k. well they look at me kind of strange
"Surely you're not happy now you no longer play the game?"

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell them that I'm doing fine watching shadows on the wall
"Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball?"

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go

Ah, people asking questions, lost in confusion
Well I tell them there's no problem, only solutions
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry
I'm just sitting here doing time

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go
I just had to let it go

I also found a YouTube video of this song, with home video clips of John with his son Sean and Ono too:
Wow! So much of these lyrics speak so deeply to my heart that I'm just sitting here shaking my head in amazement! I don't know where this journey with Yeshua (Jesus) will lead me, but HE does. As for me, I could "no longer play the game ... no longer ride on the merry-go-round ... I just HAD to let it go."
